HERITAGE
Built in 1857, The Old Mill stands as one of the Bellarine Peninsula’s most remarkable historic landmarks.
Originally established as the Portarlington Steam Flour Mill during Victoria’s early colonial expansion, the building played an important role in the region’s industrial and coastal history.
Positioned beside the pier, it connected Portarlington to the wider colony through trade, industry, and community life.
Constructed from locally quarried sandstone overlooking the sea, the Mill has remained a lasting symbol of craftsmanship, resilience, and heritage for more than 165 years.

Under the stewardship of Paul Banks, the 1857 Portarlington Mill has been thoughtfully restored and reimagined as a unique private coastal retreat, honouring the building’s extraordinary architectural and historical significance.
Known for his passion for heritage preservation and the restoration of some of Australia’s most remarkable historic estates, Paul believes that preserving heritage is about more than restoring buildings — it is about protecting stories, craftsmanship, and a sense of place for future generations.
Today, The Old Mill invites guests to experience that story beside the sea.
